The Yamaha P-45 digital piano is a beautiful piece of hardware. This digital piano replaces its predecessor, the P-35, as an entry-level piano for all those who seek for real quality at an affordable price. Released in 2015, the P-45 has a set of very sturdy 88 weighted high-quality keys that allow for a more realistic feeling. The P-45 shares a lot of similarities with its predecessor but Yamaha took all the criticism they got into consideration. Now, most of the flaws/weaknesses the P-35 had have been fixed. This review of the P-45 consists of both pros and cons and a final verdict of what we think. So, let’s jump right into it!

Usability

As a beginner, knowing that you can use a piece of hardware immediately after purchasing it is very important. Meddling with different complex components for hours on end is not something many people want to do. The Yamaha P-45 has a very user-friendly interface which makes using it a breeze. There’s no need for unnecessary installs or long-ass instruction manuals that almost no one reads!

The (P) in P-45, stands for portable. This means that no matter how you use the piano (whether professionally or otherwise) you’ll be able to carry it with you wherever you wish. What makes this possible is the weight of the digital piano in comparison to the competition.

Another thing about the P-45’s usability are the keys. As mentioned this keys are very high-quality with a lot of features that make not loving them a hard task. Side-by-side with a “real” piano it’s hard to differentiate which is which and that’s a thing every piano player can really appreciate. Like on a real piano, the low end of the Yamaha P-45 has weighted keys.

Features

The Yamaha P-45, like its predecessor, comes packed with more than enough features for the average piano player. One of the features on this digital piano is the advance wave memory stereo sampling. With the help of the advance wave memory stereo sampling, you can recreate natural instrument sound.

Another feature of this digital piano is the USB-to-host port. Although this may not sound like the most innovative thing (and frankly it isn’t), the features it adds to the piano are great and very appreciated. Some of the things you can do with the USB-to-host port include, being able to play and record the music that you’ve created using your computer. This feature is convenient cause you’re no longer forced to buy a whole new device such a simple task.

A good selection of instrument sounds, 2 modes of which include duo and dual and incredibly precise high-quality speakers are just some of the many things that come included with this piano. One of the things you can and should appreciate about this piano is how portable it is for what you pay. The quality is astonishing and honestly, there’s hardly any digital piano out there at this price point that really rivals this the Yamaha P-45.

The authenticity and pure class of this piano are what we love the most about the Yamaha P-45. It knows it’s space, knows what it does best and performs like a beast. The simplicity and raw beauty really can’t go unappreciated.

Sound

The sound of a piano can be the make or break point for a consumer. I won’t lie and tell you that this piano has world-class sound because it honestly doesn’t but (as previously mentioned) at this price point you can’t complain.

The sound is great, don’t get me wrong. You can hardly tell the difference between this one and a “real” piano. But, the sound engine could’ve honestly been better. If you’re getting this piano for any other than professional reason and if you’re not looking for the best of the best then I don’t think you should worry. However, if you want the best of the best this will not satisfy you. The bass is good but could’ve been better. The harpsichord sounds great but could have been better. The string sounds great but still could’ve been better. Overall, yes it does produce great sound but as you’ve probably guessed by now, it could’ve been better.

Competition

The Yamaha P-115 vs The Yamaha P-45

One competitor is the Yamaha P-115. Although the difference in price is quite notable, (at $150) the P-115 is still in the relatively low end of digital pianos. The P-115 is the upgrade to the P-45 like the P-45 is to the P-35. Both pianos are awesome but the ask of $150+ more doesn’t seem worth it if you take into account the minimal upgrades you get from it. The P-115 has hands down more features that the P-45 but is the minimal increase in quality really worth $150 more? That’s something you’ll have to decide for yourself!

The Yamaha P-45 vs The Casio PX-760 Privia

The Casio PX-760 Privia is a beautiful keyboard with a ton of features. At an estimated $537 it’s not too pricey in comparison to some other pianos on the market and this, in turn, makes it a somewhat competitor to the P-45. The PX-760 Privia has many similarities to the P-45 but unlike the P-45 the speakers are subpar, the keys are not as sturdy and the sound quality is, in our opinion, not as good. For the increase in price, I wouldn’t recommend getting the Casio PX-760 Privia over the Yamaha P-45.

There are some other competitors but at the end of the day, we’ll still come to very similar conclusions. For the price, the Yamaha P-45 is outclassing most (if not all) manufacturers at this price range.

Conclusion

The feel and general look and features of this digital piano are just great. Although not perfect you get much more than you pay for when ordering this one. Calling it a beginner piano is not a total lie but that statement really doesn’t express what the Yamaha P-45 is capable of. With great sound, a great interface and an even greater price there’s nothing stopping you from getting it now! Don’t miss out on this beauty!
